March means Shamrock Shakes are back at McDonald’s. To be completely honest, I have never had one. I cannot say I am all that upset about it since there is so much junk in them. Warning: if you like Shamrock Shakes and would like to keep enjoying them in the future, stop reading here. Thankfully, after you learn about how terrible these shakes are for you, you can try out my healthy AIP Protein Shamrock Shake.
The Sugar Bomb
A size small shamrock shake packs in 470 calories, 62 g carbs, and 65 g of sugar! That’s 15 teaspoons of sugar. The recommended daily added sugar intake is no more than 6 teaspoons for women and 9 teaspoons for men. A small shamrock shake contains more than double the amount of added sugar women should consume in a day. If you take a closer look, you can see there are 0.5 g of trans fats. Now you do not want those trans fats oxidizing in your body.
Is This Even Food?
The answer is no. If you take a look, there are 35 ingredients in this tiny shake, and many of them are various forms of sugar, preservatives, and dyes. Now who wants to consume all these chemicals? Many have been linked to inflammatory conditions, allergies, cancer, and more.
What do I do when the shamrock shake cravings hit?
Make my AIP Protein Shamrock Shake! This healthy alternative contains a total of six ingredients, all of which are real, whole foods. There are only 14 g of sugar, all of which are from the banana, and those are natural sugars, not added. There will be slightly more sugar depending on the type of chocolate you use, if you choose to add chocolate. When you eat real food, there is no need, in my opinion, to count calories. But, if you are curious, this shake only has 230 calories if you use a carton of coconut milk and slightly more if you use full fat coconut milk (it’s healthy fat, don’t fear the fat).
There are also 6.5 g of protein, 13 g if you use an entire scoop of protein powder. The protein is from Primal Health & Nutrition’s Natural AIP Protein Powder, which is all natural and made from grass-fed hydrolyzed beef. The protein also contains organic kale, carrot, beet root, broccoli, apple fiber, spinach and mushroom for a nutrient dense powder. Click here to learn more about the product.
